The Tradition Continues

The Three Kings are Coming: Keeping the Tradition

In early January, many people in the U.S. are already putting away their Christmas decorations and doing away with their trees. But on the evening of January 6, some families from Latin America, Spain and other parts of Europe will gather to celebrate another holiday.

Three Kings Day, also known as the Epiphany or Twelfth Night, marks the end of the Christmas season for many families and many of us have special memories of this celebration. The Gospel tells of magi or magicians who traveled looking for the new king who was going to be born. In those days they were called magi because they were following the star of Bethlehem, which predicted the coming of the new king. The Bible doesn’t provide many details but it’s believed that they were wise men or astronomers. Tradition describes them as 3 kindhearted kings because they brought gold, frankincense and myrrh as gifts for baby Jesus. In the VII century, they became known as Melchior, Gaspar and Balthasar.

The Tradition

Many families get together on January 6 to enjoy a meal that ends with a traditional crown-shaped cake. In Mexico, a small doll is hidden inside this delicious cake (a dry bean is used in France and other countries). The doll represents Jesus and the need to find him a safe place so he would not be killed by King Herod’s soldiers. According to tradition, the person who gets the slice with the doll will have to throw a party on Candlemas, February 2 (exactly 40 days after Christmas). Traditionally, tamales and atole (a hot drink thickened with corn flour) are served at this party. Some families put away their nativity scenes and Christmas decorations on this day. In Spain and other countries, the Three Kings parade through the city giving candy to children.

Also, many children get presents from the Three Wise Men instead of Santa Claus. Kids write letters to the Three Kings with their requests and place them in one of their shoes by the door in hopes of getting presents. They also leave water and fruit for the Kings and grass for their animals. The following morning, children are delighted to find small gifts inside their shoes. Children who have not behaved very well find an onion or a piece of coal instead of presents.

Continuing the Tradition

Whether you celebrated Three Kings Day as a child or you want your family to adopt this tradition, here are some ideas to celebrate this holiday:

* Have dinner with your family and friends on the night of January 6. Prepare a simple meal and have a ring-shaped Three Kings cake for dessert. Find a recipe to make this delicious cake. The person who gets the slice with the doll wears a home-made paper crown and is queen or king for the day. And don’t forget the hot chocolate!
* After dinner, read books about the story of the Three Kings to your children. Find books at the library so you won’t have to buy them. Find a public library near you.
* Leave water for the Three Kings and grass for their animals in a box outside your door. If you have children, they can write a letter to the Kings assuring them that they were good the previous year. Each one of them can leave one of their shoes by the door with the letter inside it. The next morning, the children can find simple gifts inside their shoes like new socks or fruit wrapped in shiny paper. And they will find that the grass and water they left for the animals has disappeared.
* If you celebrated Three Kings Day as a child, tell your kids and friends about how you celebrated this day. That way you’ll continue your family’s cultural traditions.

Hola, I am excited to tell you about how incredibly well the kids have been doing the past 2 weeks. click the underlined links to hear audio of mini lessons!

Los Numberos- We reviewed the basic numbers from 1-10 using the following formats: To Review Numberos 6-10 and 1-10 click here

Visual Identification- Students had to say the numer and identify it by placing the correct number on the board.
Vocal repetition- Students repeated the numbers as they sang to the numbers song.

Adding Numbers- Sumando los numberos- After reviewing the numbers, the kids learned to add the numbers in the following manner: ( click on to hear the mini lesson)

Students identified the chosen number and then had to the corresponding number of jumping jacks.
Students were chosen to represent a portion of the math sentence. For example:

Uno + Uno = Dos
1 + 1 = 2

One student jumped the number of times he/she represented. The next student did the same and the last student had to jump the total number of times of the sum of the equation.

The Vocabulary for addition sentences is the following:

Say the number you want to add.
Say the word màs which means +
Say the number that you are adding to it.
Say that it equals or in spanish es=
Say the number.

Ex. Uno màs uno es dos or 1 + 1 = 2

Students also acted out this math sentence.

HOMEWORK- Kids were given a couple of handouts that they are to use for homework. They are to choose two numbers to add together. They are then to cut that number of turkeys and pilgrims and add them together. My hope is that they will practice their addition sentences. They are to glue the math sentence they choose on the construction paper and bring it back to class next week.

THANKSGIVING VOCABULARY- We introduced the following vocabulary:

Craft- We will be making our Thanksgiving turkey next week.

Song/ Greetings- ( click to hear) We are using a Song to introduce basic greetings. The students pair up and have to act out and repeat the song and its greetings. The following are the greetings that we are covering right now:

Còmo estas
Bien gracias y tu

They sing this song in English and Spanish.

Speaking- The students are learning to speak in complete sentences when a question is asked of them. For example, in math we are learning the following sentences:

¿ Què numero es? ( what number is this)
Es el numero ________ ( it is number _____)

I am very impressed at how well they are doing. They have retained so much from last May! In the coming weeks, I hope to challenge them even more and we will begin more writing.

SNACKS- I thank all of you who brought snacks to class today. However, I am going to have to once again ask that no snacks be brought to class. Since our class is during dinner time, many of our kids loose their apetite after eating the tasty treats. Hence, it is better to not bring in snacks from now on. Thank you for your understanding.

Spring Into Spanish: Seven Simple Steps For Bilingual BlissPresented by Beth Butler/Creator of the BOCA BETH Program

Running around the neighborhood I bet you have heard this once or twice, “I know she knows how to say it. I heard her singing her colors in Spanish just this morning. Lisa, tell my friend what red is in Spanish right now!” Or perhaps this scenario rings a bell, “Jorge, I am warning you! No more English. If you want something, you have to ask me in Spanish starting ahora!” Parents across the world see a very global future for their children and want to prepare them for it. We have read or heard about the experts’ reports of bilingual children scoring higher on standardized tests and reading sooner than monolingual children. Yet there seems to be a struggle to achieve that blissful state of learning. Many times children rebel at using their native language of Spanish; thus eliciting threats from the parent of no communication in any other language but Spanish. Then there is the Anglo parent who, with all good intentions, eagerly enrolls their child in a fairly expensive once-a-week language class; only to wonder why that same child will not ‘perform’ for family and friends her new words in Spanish.With the following seven simple steps and suggestions you and your family can bloom into a second language journey – blissfully and with smiles:
1. Start the second language learning as early in your child’s life as possible. Experts agree – the earlier, the better. Think of how you learned your native language. It’s all about vocabulary at first so remember that repetition is the key for all your child’s learning. Experts say it is just as easy for a child to learn two words in two languages for one item as it is to learn just one word. Introduce the new language bilingually, using the native language and the new together, for any child birth through 8-10 years old. (Immersion should be used for children 8 -10 and older.)
2. Find a bilingual language learning program, product or class for your child that incorporates the following components necessary for success: visual, music, beginning reading and verbal exchange. Give your child the opportunity to enjoy the new language daily for 10 to 30 minutes (depending upon the age of your child, more time needs to be spent as your child continues to develop his language skills).
3. Show your child you value speaking a second language. If you speak mainly English in your home invite a Spanish speaking friend over, attend cultural events where both native & new languages are spotlighted through music, dance, food and more and turn on the Spanish channel on TV and the radio. If you speak mainly Spanish in your home invite new English speaking friends over and get them involved in learning Spanish as you cook for them, entertain them and welcome them into your home, visit the local library for bilingual books and fun children’s programs and make learning the new language fun for your child and yourself.
4. Do not allow anyone try to convince you that learning a second language needs to come after your child has mastered her native language. The myth that children will be language delayed or have a language disorder if a new language is introduced early in life is just that – a myth. The latest study out of Texas on this subject suggests that children up to the age of five can learn five languages simultaneously. I will caution that you not settle for immersion for your young child during her school day. It should not be ‘sink or swim’ in the English only classroom for the Spanish speaking child nor should a Spanish only class be used with your English speaking first grader. Your child should be allowed contact with his/her native language throughout the day until at least the age of 8-10 years old.
5. For Spanish speaking families it is a lot of work to continue your native language within your home and community when English is the dominant and daily language your child hears. As in most of parenting, keep a smile first of all. Refuse to fall into the trap of making your child ‘perform’ in your native Spanish language. Encourage your child to appreciate their native language by appreciating it yourself and speaking it with love. Try not threaten to speak only in Spanish to your child in order to get them to respond back to you in Spanish. This will alienate them from you, their language and their heritage. Your child will understand everything you say to them, but your child might often times make the conscious effort to refuse to verbalize back in their native tongue due to your threats. One last note: You, as the parent, need to practice your new language of English. Try to make it a family effort to soften your accent when speaking English. Instead of being embarrassed by your Spanish accent, show your child you are proud to be Hispanic and will continue to work on your new language as you ask your child to work on their native language. Practice what you preach!
6. Have realistic expectations for your child. Becoming fluent in a new language takes time and takes living the language. Avoid getting a one-on-one tutor for your child during the early years (birth – 8 years old). This language journey should be fun – filled with music, games and creativity (not conjugating verbs and grammar). Try not to look for your child to be conversational after benchmarks you set up yourself. Every child learns and develops differently – allow your child to enjoy this language learning by not pressuring your child to excel in or perform in either language. The sign of a true linguist is one who code switches. That is, one who can flow between both languages easily within one sentence, one thought, one conversation.
7. The ideal situation in any home where the parent wishes to raise a bilingual child is for one parent to speak Spanish full time with their young child while the other parent speaks English full time. They would flow back and forth between the two languages – explaining things in both languages when possible. We all realize this takes a tremendous amount of effort. We also realize that this is not the norm in most households across the world which is why we look for simple solutions that fit into our daily lives.
You can do this. You can give your child the gift of a second language. You are your child’s best teacher. You just need to find the tools to jump start their second language journey today. You know what makes your child excited about learning. You know what you can fit into your daily routine and still make it fun for all. You just need to do it!

REVIEW:MATERIAL:We reviewed our face with songs, a quick game of Simon says and question and answer sessions.

La Cara- The face

Days of the Week- We sang another catchy song by BOCA BETH to review the days of the week.

Numbers 1-10- Again we used song by BOCA BETH to reinforce the numbers 1-10.

NEW MATERIAL: El cuerpo- the body

The kids should have come home with a Mini Me! They had a blast creating an outline of their bodies. Once the body was traced and cut, we hung it up and began to learn the body parts.

We drew these body parts and colored them one at a time. We finished with the Hokey Pokey

On abril 29th, we will have our annual, bring your amigo to class night. This night is a fun night intended to introduce your friends to the beauty of the Spanish language. We will have games, videos and a craft. Please bring your amigo but make sure they know the rules of our classroom: Respect one another and have fun.

We played a game of head and shoulders knees and toes in both English and Spanish. The children have a handout with the vocabulary words.
I introduced La Cara- The face

We concentrated on the face- with the following format:

Sang- This is the way I wash my face, hair, eyes, nose, etc. but we substituted the Spanish words for those body parts.
We played a few games of Simon Says touch your Cara.
We created and played with our cara flash cards!

Videos- Please check out the videos posted on the blog. This is an excellent way to keep the kids practicing and listening to Spanish during the week.

T.V. Station- I found yet another fun and educational station in Spanish. If you have the Dish Network, it is channel 9401.

Tarea- Homework- Please have the kids play with their flash cards and listen to the link for the Face so that they can hear the face parts on a daily basis.

I wrote a book for them entitled "Yo Soy Yo" I am me and this song: The book is a little different than the song but the kids liked it.

The kids had to trace each sentence and vocabulary words.
They also had to draw the body part as we sang the song in the book.

Students should say this daily and initial besides the correct day of the week on the handout.

We will be exchanging valentines next month on Feb. 12th. Below are the names of the kids in the class:

TUITION

THEME

Our theme will be weather, seasons, overview of the months
We will study the science behind the wind, snow, rain and temperature changes. A little introduction into solids and liquids.
This theme will run into next month's theme. I will take a different season each week and talk about the months that correspond to it, the temperatures, the weather.

Introduction:

I reviewed numbers 1-10 with students
I introduced numbers 11-10 with the following formats:

Song - This song combined singing with body movements to teach numbers 1-20
Trace worksheet- Students had to listen for a specific number, identify and trace it. Numbers 11-20
Which one is next? Students had to tell me which number comes next in Spanish.
Rhymes- The kids wanted to share the English counting rhymes. We substituted the numbers in Spanish.
Calendar :

We reviewed the days of the week with calendar shuffle .
We reviewed the following phrases:

Què dìa es hoy? - What day is today?
Hoy es ____________ Today is _________

Students had to translate a day of the week and answer the question in Spanish.

Book

Queenie had 15 daughters. This book was used to review animals, days of the week and introduce numbers 1-15

We sang our Buenos Dìas song

Cultural Awareness- We talked about 3 wise men and the Latin American Celebration. Students also exchanged their gifts.

Inclement Weather

I would like to apologize to anyone whom I might have inconvenienced by canceling class today. I hope everyone received the e-mail that I sent yesterday and also was able to see the note on the blog. IF however, I missed you, I am sorry for the wasted trip to class.

I pulled a back muscle in my pursuit of bending down to pick up Elly. Sigh... a sign of my age I guess.

CLASS UPDATE

CELEBRATION OF THE 3 WISE MEN WILL TAKE PLACE NEXT WEEK.
Please bring a small gift from the dollar store for your child's amigo.
We will be placing gifts in each others shoes next week. A little late but better late than never.

TUITION
Tuition will be $ 41.25 again because of the missed class. Please put the money in an envelope and label it if you are paying with cash. I will have the tuition box ready for you.

OUR NEXT THEME

Our next theme will be weather, seasons.
We will study the science behind the wind, snow, rain and temperature changes. A little introduction into solids and liquids.
We will learn the month of January and review the days and numbers 1-20.

Papà Noel, Santa Clos-- La Navidad

REVIEW-

Songs- This week and last week we continued to review wild animals with our "Wild Animal Song" and also the stuffed animals. The kids really like this song.

Song- Last week we Re introduced the Farm animals with "Old Mc Donald Had a Farm" in Spanish.

Numbers- We continue to use our flashcards with farm animals to review both numbers and farm animals.

Our I Spy with my little eye hand out was completed this week. We used this handout to look for numbers and animals. This handout was divided into a 2 week lesson. The kids loved the challenge.

We also spoke about the habitat for these animals versus pets and wild animals.

Calendar Fun-

We continue to learn our days of the week with several games. The kids have learned to say the following:

They have become very good at saying their days of the week and numbers. Next month we will concentrate on numbers 11-20 and how to say, "Tomorrow is _______

Cultural Awareness-
The kids have now been introduced to how Mexico and Bolivia celebrate Christmas. We have used our passports to travel to South America and South of the Border. We have used our imaginations and gone on a plane ride. Once we arrive at our destinations, their passports are stamped and the kids are informed on their surroundings. A brief description of the landscape, weather and feasts are given to them.

Bolivia- Midnight Mass, Its summer there, Creche is made of tiny little replicas of the trades of various people, fresh flowers are cut, tea is given.
Mexico- Celebrations begin with the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe which is Dec. 12th. - I showed them a movie about this tradition. Talked about Las Posadas and the fun piñatas that are available to them from Dec. 11- Jan.6th.
Introduced them to Feliz Navidad Song.

Amigos Navideños- Christmas friends. In order to wrap up a truly realistic celebration of how Latin America celebrates Christmas,... we have to have a 3 Wise Men Party. This will take place on Jan. 8th. The kids will bring their Christmas friend a little gift from the dollar store. They will then place the gift in their friend's shoe. This is how this day is celebrated. The kids received the names of their amigo/a on a card... please make sure that they show it to you.

NEXT WEEK- We will wrap up animals and have a lot of Spanish Christmas Caroling and fun games. At this point.. the kids are really excited and learning will be more efficient through games and fun.

Story of Guadalupe

Our Lady of Guadalupe

Also known as: Holy Mary of Guadalupe; Virgin of Guadalupe; Maria de Guadalupe
Memorial: 12 December
Profile: Guadalupe is, strictly speaking, the name of a picture, but the name was extended to the church containing the picture and to the town that grew up around the church. It makes the shrine, it occasions the devotion, it illustrates Our Lady. It is taken as representing the Immaculate Conception, being the lone figure of the woman with the sun, moon, and star accompaniments of the great apocalyptic sign with a supporting angel under the crescent. The word is Spanish Arabic, but in Mexico it may represent certain Aztec sounds.

Its tradition is long-standing and constant, and in sources both oral and written, Indian and Spanish, the account is unwavering. The Blessed Virgin appeared on Saturday 9 December 1531 to a 55 year old neophyte named Juan Diego, who was hurrying down Tepeyac hill to hear Mass in Mexico City. She sent him to Bishop Zumárraga to have a temple built where she stood. She was at the same place that evening and Sunday evening to get the bishop's answer. The bishop did not immediately believed the messenger, had him cross-examined and watched, and he finally told him to ask the lady who said she was the mother of the true God for a sign. The neophyte agreed readily to ask for sign desired, and the bishop released him.

Juan was occupied all Monday with Bernardino, an uncle, who was dying of fever. Indian medicine had failed, and Bernardino seemed at death's door. At daybreak on Tuesday 12 December 1531, Juan ran to nearby Saint James's convent for a priest. To avoid the apparition and the untimely message to the bishop, he slipped round where the well chapel now stands. But the Blessed Virgin crossed down to meet him and said, "What road is this thou takest son?" A tender dialogue ensued. She reassured Juan about his uncle, to whom she also briefly appeared and instantly cured. Calling herself Holy Mary of Guadalupe she told Juan to return to the bishop. He asked the sign for the sign he required. Mary told him to go to the rocks and gather roses. Juan knew it was neither the time nor the place for roses, but he went and found them. Gathering many into the lap of his tilma, a long cloak or wrapper used by Mexican Indians, he came back. The Holy Mother rearranged the roses, and told him to keep them untouched and unseen until he reached the bishop. When he met with Zumárraga, Juan offered the sign to the bishop. As he unfolded his cloak the roses, fresh and wet with dew, fell out. Juan was startled to see the bishop and his attendants kneeling before him. The life size figure of the Virgin Mother, just as Juan had described her, was glowing on the tilma. The picture was venerated, guarded in the bishop's chapel, and soon after carried in procession to the preliminary shrine.

The coarsely woven material of the tilme which bears the picture is as thin and open as poor sacking. It is made of vegetable fibre, probably maguey. It consists of two strips, about seventy inches long by eighteen wide, held together by weak stitching. The seam is visible up the middle of the figure, turning aside from the face. Painters have not understood the laying on of the colours. They have deposed that the "canvas" was not only unfit but unprepared, and they have marvelled at apparent oil, water, distemper, etc. colouring in the same figure. They are left in equal admiration by the flower-like tints and the abundant gold. They and other artists find the proportions perfect for a maiden of fifteen. The figure and the attitude are of one advancing. There is flight and rest in the eager supporting angel. The chief colours are deep gold in the rays and stars, blue green in the mantle, and rose in the flowered tunic.

The place, called Guadalupe Hidalgo since 1822, is three miles northeast of Mexico City. Pilgrimages have been made to this shrine almost without interruption since 1531-1532. A shrine at the foot of Tepeyac Hill served for ninety years, and still forms part of the parochial sacristy. In 1622 a rich shrine was erected, and in 1709 a newer one even richer one. There are also a parish church, a convent and church for Capuchin nuns, a well chapel, and a hill chapel all constructed in the 18th century. About 1750 the shrine got the title of collegiate, a canonry and choir service being established. It was aggregated to Saint John Lateran in 1754. In 1904 it was created a basilica, with the presiding ecclesiastic being called abbot. The shrine has been renovated in Byzantine style which presents an illustration of Guadalupan history.

Christmas in South America

Native Bolivians celebrate Christmas more as a harvest festival. Thanks are given for completion of the year's work. They give an account of the work done during the year and propose what is to be done the next year. Christmas tends to become a feast of adoration of the Goddess Mother Earth, who is asked to bring a fruitful harvest, to keep away plagues, and to give a prosperous year.

In Brazil Santa Claus is little known and those who do know of the jolly fellow call him Papa Noel.

The children have no Christmas trees, but they do have a crèche or Presepio, representing the Christ-child's birth. Gifts and toys are exchanged during the holidays after which the Presepio is put away until the following Christmas.

In Ecuador the children write letters to the Christ-child and place shoes in the window in which he may place toys as he passes by on Christmas Eve. Noise-making toys are common and are used with much energy on the streets on Christmas morning.

Since the weather is very warm, most celebrations are in the streets. There are firecrackers, brass bands, and dancing. At midnight everyone goes to Mass. after which the family dinner is enjoyed.

Holiday Traditions Imported From Bolivia

In Bolivia they have a Nacimiento instead of a Christmas tree.

The tradition started when everyone in the town would bring an offering to the Christ child in the crèche at the church. Towns people would bring a miniature version of their trade or specialty as a gift to baby Jesus. For example a shoemaker would bring a miniature pair of shoes, a dressmaker would sew miniature dress, a baker might bring a miniature loaf of bread.

The tradition has evolved and now there is a Nacimiento in many homes. It is a tiered type of pyramid-like display. The baby Jesus is in a crèche at the top surrounded by lower tiers of miniature figurines of carved wood, blown glass, paper mache... representing gifts. The miniatures can be of almost anything at all: animals, food, clothing, toys, paintings, utensils...

Throughout South America and Spain
Christmas is celebrated in a deeply
religious way. But there are peculiar and interesting differences in each country.

ARGENTINA
URUGUAY

Argentina and Uruguay are countries with many cultural influences. So their Christmas traditions are diverse and it is very difficult to generalize. Following are some broad local traditions. Both countries have a summer time Christmas unlike that of the United States. Despite this, their traditions are quite similar.
People celebrate it with devotion and joy. The tradition of Nativity scene and Xmas tree, gift-giving, banquets and picnics, and fireworks at around midnight.
People usually select any artificial or live tree to display at home. These trees are decorated with colored lights, ornaments and candles. All Christmas gifts are placed under the tree. Many set up the Nativity scene, a model of the manger where Jesus Christ was born.
The devout also attend a Christmas church service, if this is part of their family's holiday tradition. Many plan a barbecue or picnic, as their Christmas meal, to take advantage of the pleasant weather. Along with the special and usual holiday items, pan dulce (a Christmas bread filled with candies) and sidra (cider) or champagne are served with dessert.

Calendar Fun

Students had to identify their day of the week card
Next Students had to say their weekday and get in proper order
Lastly, students had to rise their weekday when they heard it on the the song. The song used was days of the week.

Phrases Practice

We practiced saying phrases by combining days of the week.
Students had to say, " Hola, hoy es___________"( the day of the week that corresponded to them.) They also had to recognize my question, "¿Què dìa es hoy?
This little practice was done playing "roll the ball" which the kids really seem to enjoy.

Numbers Review

We reviewed numbers 1-10
We introduced numbers 11, 12
I used flashcards to combine the review and introduction with farm animals that we are learning.
The kids also had to listen to the question in Spanish and respond in a short sentence.
Example: ¿Cùantas vacas hay? which means "How many cows are there" Next, the kids had to respond " Hay _________vacas" ( depending on the number)

Animal Review

We reviewed wild animals using the Animales song and stuffed animals.
Kids each received 2 different wild animals and they were to identify and act out their movements when they heard the animal in the song.
One student was in the middle and the others in an outer circle. Student had to listen for his/her animal and jump in the circle when they hear it.

Each child will choose a secret amigo/a and on Jan. 8th they will bring in a present for him/her from the dollar store. ( should only cost 1.00) We will place gift in the shoe and celebrate the 3 wise men day.

This is a fun cultural experience for the kids.

Christmas Song- I will choose one Christmas song for the kids to memorize.. Most likely the popular Feliz Navidad song.

Played the count and jump song
Auditory identification of numbers- students had to listen to the number that I said out loud and identify the number. Next they had to color in the number that they thought I said. This is a type of translation exercise.

INTRODUCTION TO PETS- MASCOTAS
We began our new theme of animals by introducing the students to our favorite animals... pets- mascotas. We discussed the various types of pets- mascotas. Included in these are

gatos- cats
perros- dogs
peces- fish
tortugas- turtles

We compared various characteristics of these animals such as whether or not they had they shared the following:

cola- tail
bigotes- whiskers
patas- paws
piel- fur

Students filled in a chart with stickers as we covered these various characteristics.

HOMEWORK- Review the words we covered this week. Have students draw their favorite mascota/s - pet/s on the sheet of paper that I gave them. They will share them with the class next week.

SNACKS-

A few parents expressed concern to me about snacks inhibiting the kid's meal time. Therefore, I have decided to end with snacks at this time. We will not have snacks you no one will need to bring in anything.

VIDEOS- I have had some problems with my camera which is why I have not make any videos. I hope to have this issue resolved very soon so that you may have videos available to you. It is my hope that you will be able to see and hear the words that we cover in class with these videos.

NOTE: I am so very proud of the way that the kids have adapted to the class and its format. They are such a joy to have and I am having a great time teaching them the beauty of the Spanish Language.

They had to guess what the texture was and attempt to identify it.

This song also allows us to learn the words amigos, amigas, hola, adìos
Now that the kids know one another a little better, we greeted each other by
name during the appropriate part of the song.

TPR- I taught the kids a little song that reviewed the greeting, "Hello, my names is."

The song included body movements in which the children had to roll the ball to myself and one another. When the ball was rolled I asked them,"Còmo te llamas? " They should have responded, "Me llamo _______" . The children all enjoyed this game very much.

NUMBER FUN- Students were given a large colorful number card. Each student was given a number from 1-10. In a circle, the children were instructed to raise the number they heard during the Number Song. Each child had to count in Spanish and recognize their number.

BOOK READING- I read the book BUGS, BUGS, BUGS. This book was used to review both numbers 1-10 and the sense of vista/ sight. The kids had to learn the Spanish phrase, "Donde?" which means "where"

LOS SENTIDOS/ THE SENSES

We reviewed the senses in general and their corresponding body parts but we focused on the following two senses this week:

El Oìdo- Hearing- I had the children sit in a circle and turn their backs to me. They were instructed to listen to an object that I had and identify the sound that they heard. I played the recorder for them, the maracas, and other sounds for them to identify. Next, we spoke about how music helps to set a mood for us. I played various types of music for them. Some were slow, fast, seasonal, disco, and classical. The children had to use their sentido de oìdo to dance appropriately according to the kind of music that they heard.
La Vista- Sight- Once again, the children sat in a circle and this time they face me. I pulled various objects out of a bag one at a time. The children had to identify the object using their sense/sentido de vista. We spoke about how we use our vista to identify objects that are dangerous and objects that are friendly. For example, I pulled a stuffed bear out of the bag. When I asked the kids if they were scared they all responded with a resounding NO!. They used their vista to identify an object that was not a Real bear.

HOMEWORK -Students are to continue coloring their Los Sentidos , coloring booklet and play the memory game.

CULTURAL AWARENESS DAY- We talked a little about Columbus Day and what it means to Latin America. They were given a Christopher Columbus puppet to complete at home. They do not have to bring this back to class.

SNACKS- We did not have snacks because none were brought to class. Please remember to look at the Snack schedule and verify your night for snacks.

CLASS OBSERVATION- It was my observation that the students seemed much more relaxed without the parents watching. Thank you for your cooperation. You are still welcome to observe as long as we keep the number of parents to 1 or 2 and they sit quietly in the back. My apologies to those who did not receive an e-mail newsletter.

HALLOWEEN CUSTOMES- If the kids want to wear their Halloween Customes on Oct. 30th, please let them. It is always so much fun to see them all dressed up. I will have a little treat for each of them.

THE 5 SENSES- LOS 5 SENTIDOS

We reviewed the 5 sentidos : la vista, el olfato, el tacto, el gusto y el oìdo.
We also introduced the body parts that go with each one

la vista- los ojos- eyes
el olfato- la nariz- nose
el tacto- el cuerpo, las manos, los pies- body, hands, feet
el gusto- la boca, la lengua- mouth , tongue
el oìdo- los oìdos- ears

THE SENSE OF TASTE - EL GUSTO AND THE SENSE OF SMELL- EL OLFATO

We focused on these two senses and their body parts through

Guessing games
Physical responses

Our sciece experiment consisted of having the children close their ojos and smell various foods. Likewise, we had them taste various foods while keeping their eyes closed. For our final experiment the children where to smell and sour food and then taste a sweet one. It was interesting to see how some of the kids did not want to taste the "sour"food but then they realized they were eating a sweet one instead. This stressed the importance of our sense working in unison.

We sang Hola Amigos from last week and reintroduced the following greetings:

Hola, buenas trades- hello, good afternoon.
Hola, buenas noches- hello, good night

OUR GAME

We danced to La Rueda de San Miguel. The kids seem to have picked up on this very quickly.

I read them a book about a trip to the city. We had to figure out which sense was used in each circumstance.

We reviewed how to say the days of the week and sang 1-10 in English and Spanish.

The kids get hungry and one of the things they look forward to is Snack time. I usually leave the last 5 minutes for snack time. Please see the schedule below as I have assigned weeks for everyone to bring in a snack. There should be enough snacks and drinks for 10 people.

Most kids like to put all these items in a back pack. It is a lot to carry especially when we get finished with our craft.
